Summer 2019: Program 1 – Day 3

The fun never stops at Reach Cambridge – today was as busy as ever!

Some of our Taster course students were lucky enough to experience a trip to the historic University of Oxford, where they briefly sampled the life of an undergraduate at the only university in the UK older than Cambridge!

The friendly battle between Teams Ice and Fire developed, with Team Fire scoring its first points, taking the tally up to 10-20 for Fire and Ice respectively.

Our activities today included sports on the well-loved Cambridge park called Christ’s Pieces (so named because it’s near Christ’s College, and is comprised of several different pieces of grass). Many more students were introduced to the sport of Rounders (which also featured in yesterday’s blog – do we spot a theme developing?!). A number of other challenging sports were available too, including tennis, football and ultimate frisbee.

For those wishing to have a more relaxed yet intellectually stimulating afternoon, there were a variety of card games and trivia quizzes on offer. This no doubt got the brain juices pumping, ready for the evening lecture on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. In this lecture, students discussed and debated the pros and cons of artificial intelligence and focused heavily on the example of whether self-driving cars were a good idea or not. The debate was fiery and intense, and excellent arguments were presented for both sides. In the end, it was the Pro side that took the winning spot in the debate: so start up the self-driving cars…

Finally, the entertainment for the evening was provided in the form of a movie night, in which students decided to watch the The Incredibles 2, while others engaged in a Nintendo Switch Mario Kart Tournament! Many students also opted to wander the beautiful streets of Cambridge on a wonderful summer’s evening with their new friends.
