http://www.reachcambridge.com/courses/university-enrichment/biotechnology

This exciting course will offer a detailed introduction to biotechnology and explore its influence on the life sciences more generally. The programme will be led by experts in the field and involve both theoretical and practical work including excursions and work in the laboratory. Key topics that will be covered include genetics, drug resistance, oncology and pharmaceutical science, biotechnology devices and product design, and protein analysis. Teaching will take the form of both lectures by experts in the field and intensive daily supervision from tutors in small groups. It will also include some interdisciplinary sessions with our Chemistry and Medicine programme.

The programme will tackle both the academic study of biotechnology but also explore its practical applications in the real world. This will be explored through a guided tour of a local Biotechnology firm and practicals in which students are given hands-on experience with drug design and discovery. Students will be offered a unique insight, therefore, into both the study of biotechnology at university but also the vocational opportunities in the field beyond the academy. This exciting and dynamic course will be a challenging but rewarding programme for all those students with a passionate interest in biotechnology.

Reach Cambridge is proud of its excellent links with local charities. If you would like to earn 10 hours of Community Service over three afternoons to supplement your course, this can be arranged. You will be involved in a project relating to one of our partner charities. In 2012, the chosen charity was our long standing partner 'SABRE', a charity that supports government initiatives to enhance the school system in rural parts of Ghana for children. In previous years projects have included maintaining historic statues for the National Trust or getting students involved in organising a SABRE fundraising day. This is a great way to get something extra out of the experience that will help with University applications. Students gain 10 community service hours.

http://www.reachcambridge.com/courses/global-leaders/global-leaders-programme

Classes are followed by an array of activities for students to get involved in: from open sports, drama and art classes to free time exploring Cambridge with new friends. The afternoon will also include academic & life skill workshops together with local excursions.

In the evenings, after dinner, there is an exciting and thought-provoking series of lectures and debates on World Issues, British Culture and invaluable Life Skills.

Classes and afternoon activities in the week are complemented by a trip to an iconic site in Britain to soak up culture, history (and maybe even do a little shopping).

Course Description

This intensive one-week course has been designed with one question in mind: What skills and attributes do young people need in the 21st century in order to be successful? Whether applying to University, moving into the world of work or learning to stand on you own two feet, this course will help prepare you for what lies ahead.

The Global Leaders Program includes key technical & academic skills such as presenting and project managing but crucially these skills are integrated with soft skills such as how to interview and how to manage others.

The course structure is a combination of class-based tuition in the mornings plus afternoon workshops and hands-on trips that complement the morning classes. Here are some of the key skills incorporated in the course:

Technical & Academic skills:

Time Management including project management techniques

Study skills including revision techniques

Writing an outstanding CV and cover letter

Making a presentation including Power Point

Essay writing & academic writing techniques

Life skills:

Interview Technique

Getting the most from yourself

Teamwork

Managing a team

Elevator pitches

Networking

Goal-setting

Discussion and debate skills

Integral to the course is an excursion to the seats of power and leadership in the UK: The Houses of Parliament and Buckingham Palace.

In the increasingly competitive and global 21st century, these skills and experiences are essential for young people to be successful. Students are introduced to inspiring speakers, teachers and practitioners who tell their own stories about how their passion, skills and attributes have brought them success. This course passes on these key skills and attributes to a new generation of global leaders.

GLOBAL LEADERS PLUS ACADEMIC COURSES

The 'Global Leaders Programme' can be extended by signing up for one of our Three Week August Programmes, which incorporate the Global Leaders Programme in the first week, followed by two weeks studying one of our excellent academic courses such as Psychology, English Literature and Biotechnology. Click here to return to the list of courses .
