The day began with a welcome relief from the blasting heat which had dogged us for all of first week! The breath of cool air was more than welcome as students headed off to classes. There, they joined their friends to continue pursuing topics in law, STEM, engineering, creative writing, politics, and sociology after a busy weekend full of excursions and sports.
The weather quickly grew hotter, however, as the excitement for everyone turned to the afternoon’s headline activity, as students would be taken to enjoy the quintessential Cambridge activity: punting! Punts have been used on the Thames since the 19th century for fishing and for pleasure. Today, the students took to the river for a stunning guided tour of the city’s most splendid buildings, including St John’s, Trinity, and King’s colleges, as they glid down the river Cam.
After a packed lunch to gear the students for the boating tour, everyone had a chance to explore the many restaurants and shops that Cambridge has to offer in its vibrant city centre for dinner before heading to a scintillating evening lecture. This time, Mo Tanweer of the University of Cambridge delivered a deeply stimulating talk on the many potential challenges and benefits offered by generative AI.
Following on from this lecture, students had the time to unwind following a busy day with some relaxing evening activities. Some brought out their creative skills at the tote bag and shirt making worship, while others began to prepare for and look ahead to the World Showcase. This is an exciting opportunity for students to showcase their talents and the cultures of their home countries on one of the final evenings of the programme, which promises to be one of the highlights of both weeks!
