For day number two we were yet again blessed with idyllic sunshine!
This morning it felt as if we were really starting to settle into a routine, beginning with breakfast in our colleges before heading to classes for the morning. Moving beyond their introductory sessions, a few classes had practicals on today: Biotechnology ran an experiment, and Medicine and Life Sciences dissected sheeps’ hearts.
Class is always followed by some well-deserved free time to explore Cambridge city centre and let the students bond with their new friends and explore local food offerings. It’s been so lovely to see friendships beginning to form as the students find their feet and their new friends.
Our Taster Courses kicked off today, with students choosing from a variety of topics – Architecture, Engineering, History & Politics, Neuroscience, or Pre-Hospital Emergency Medicine. The taster courses are always an amazing way for our students to either try something new or explore something related to their chosen subject. For those students not enrolled in taster courses, the afternoon held an exciting array of activities. Some enjoyed postcard-making in Gonville and Caius College, while others took part in an exciting game of Mafia – an exciting interactive detective game.
Following on from last night’s drumming workshop, the whole Reach cohort gathered together for tonight’s evening lecture: ‘A Life of Flying’. We were privileged to hear former RAF and commercial pilot Tony Evans narrate his various different flying adventures, followed by lots of curious and thoughtful questions from our students about aeroplanes and travelling.
After the lecture our students chose between board games, a film night and free time to relax, before heading back to their colleges for some much-needed rest. We look forward to another exciting activity-packed day tomorrow, and can’t wait to see the students continue to grow in confidence, be stretched and inspired in their classes and enjoy the beautiful city of Cambridge.
