Summer 2025: Program 2 – Day 7

  • July 27, 2025
  • By Author: Nicole Banas

Today we embarked on a thrilling day trip to the vibrant heart of the United Kingdom: London! The excitement was palpable this morning as everyone gathered bright and early, ready for a day packed with iconic landmarks and unforgettable experiences. Our journey began promptly at 9:00 AM, as we boarded our coaches and made our way towards the city. Upon arrival, our large group split into two distinct teams, each set to explore a different side of what London has to offer.

The first group embarked on a comprehensive walking tour of London, a perfect way to immerse themselves in the city’s history and politics. Their route took them past some of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. Starting at Trafalgar Square, the very centre of London, our students then moved onto Buckingham Palace, the official residence of the monarch. We were lucky enough to catch the Sunday Ceremony right on time; allowing us to catch a few pictures of the King’s Guards!

After a walk through the park we arrived at Westminister Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, the magnificent building where the UK government conducts its business. We were also able to crane our necks into Number 10 Downing Street. And of course, our students had an eyeful of the iconic Big Ben, the famous clock tower which is a symbol of London itself. The tour finished off at the artsy Covent Garden, a bustling hub of street performers, unique shops, and lots of eats to choose from. Students enjoyed some well-deserved free time here, exploring the various stalls, watching talented buskers, and indulging in a bit of shopping, picking up souvenirs for their trip.

Meanwhile, the second group delved into London’s rich cultural scene, starting with a truly unique experience at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. This reconstruction of the open-air playhouse is where many of Shakespeare’s plays were first performed. The students had the incredible opportunity to watch a performance of “The Merry Wives of Windsor”, a comedy. The vibrant costumes, energetic performances, and the unique setting made for a truly immersive theatrical experience. After indulging in some theatre, the group moved onto the Tate Modern, one of the world’s leading museums in modern and contemporary art.

Both groups reunited in the afternoon after their free time, before our supervisors rounded everyone up to take them back to the coaches. Tired but happy (and with arms heavy with some shopping!) our students returned back to Cambridge and set off to get some dinner.

Despite their busy day, the supervisor team set up several chill activities for the students to enjoy in the evening. Trinity Hall hosted a  movie night on the big screeen for students to watch. In the meantime, Caius had an arts and crafts activity set up, complete with jazz music, allowing students to wind down after a long day.

Lessons will be beginning once again as usual starting from tomorrow: so it was important students get a good night’s rest before they return to their lessons!
