Summer 2025: Program 2 – Day 8

  • July 28, 2025
  • By Author: Nicole Banas

This morning our students headed back to classes after a weekend of fun excursions and some relaxing down time. This also meant the start of week 2 of the programme; one half down, and much more to go!

After exploring the town to get lunch, and heading off to Taster courses for students who have them, it was time for a Cambridge favourite: punting! Initially used for transporting goods, trade and fishing, punting is a particularly popular past time for students and tourists. It was a lovely day for it too: the sun was shining as our students split into groups and piled into their punts. We were joined by our Scudamore’s tour guide, who not only pushed us down the River Cam but also told us an array of fun and interesting facts about the colleges we passed on our route. From historical facts about the biggest and richest colleges and their adjoining bridges, to stories of student shenanigans, we cruised down the river. Despite a few bumpy crashes, our students made it back to the bank safe and sound for a short break before dinner.

Dinner today was provided by student’s respective colleges. After which, it was time for a new series of evening lectures hosted by Reach in the McCrum Lecture Theatre at Corpus. Tonight’s lecture was by Tony Evans, who dove into his fascinating and lifelong love of flying. Tony’s lecture covered some historical background of his passion alongside some of its intricate technicalities. After 29 years flying military planes, Tony decided to move into flying civillian planes, giving him the opportunity to fly to new and novel distant places. Our students were presented with emergency scenarios, allowing them to take the place of a captain for a short time!

This evening, our supervisors hosted the return of pottery; this time allowing our students to paint the beautiful creations they had crafted last week! After a weekend of drying, it was time to give them some colour. Students enjoyed finally being able to decorate their pottery and bring it back with them. At the same time in Trinity Hall, students were eagerly prepping for the World Fair event which will be hosted on Thursday; an exciting oppotunity for our variety of students from all over the world to show off their respective countries and cultures. Students excitedly prepped together for the chance to present a talk about themselves and their country.

As always, the evening offered some free time for our students to pick up some things from the shop or get some late night ice cream with friends.
