After their adventure at Oxford yesterday, our students deserved a lie-in this Saturday morning. The chill start to the day was appreciated by all, as quickly came our first planned slot of activities: Sports Day! Unfortunately, British weather had other plans for our eagerly anticipated Sports Day. By 3pm it was pouring rain in Cambridge, making the walk to the University sports grounds quite soggy. The tracks were sadly too wet and slippy to allow the planned Sports Days to go ahead, much to everyone’s disappointment. However, our team quickly organised a solution, setting up several rooms worth of fun activities for students to get involved with. Just Dance on the big screen was a hit with those who wanted to release some energy, a good opportunity to dance it out to some favourite tunes.
Meanwhile, the competitive spirit continued in a different form through the various board games provided. Students became focused in on intense rounds of chess, card games, and poker, all of which brought out classic rivalries and team work. Many impromptu games turned up over the course of the day, including others like Jenga and Dobble.
For those who preferred a more creative outlet, the bracelet making station remained popular, with students meticulously crafting intricate designs and sharing their creations with friends. It was wonderful to see that despite the weather being down, our team and students maintained high spirits inside! The catering team did a superb job providing some truly great food which everyone thoroughly enjoyed, such as jerk chicken and curry, which had us all clearing our plates.
The fun wasn’t over yet: after a short break, our supervisors arranged some more lively evening activities. The night kicked off with a karaoke session, where we discovered some hidden talents and witnessed some brave, hilarious performances. Students cheered each other on and sang their hearts out, and most importantly, the room was abuzz with laughter and applause.
For those who wanted to unwind with a more reflective activity, a postcard making activity was set up. Students enjoyed decorating and writing messages to friends and family, sharing tales of their summer school adventures. It was a lovely way to connect with loved ones back home and reflect on all the amazing experiences they’ve had so far.
Despite the change of plans, today remained a great success, proving that a little rain can’t dampen the fun had at our summer programme.
