Summer 2025: Program 2 – Day 5

  • July 26, 2025
  • By Author: Nicole Banas

Today our students traded the more familiar surroundings of Cambridge, which have become their home for the last week, for its biggest historic rival – Oxford! Finally it was time to explore past the walls of Cambridge on the student’s first excursion of the programme. With the sun finally out, our student’s were excited as they gathered after their hearty college breakfasts. Our coaches set off early at 9am, arriving at Oxford for around 11, so it was a bright and early start.

Upon arrival in Oxford, the students were split into groups into their preferred activities. For some, it was the Ashmoleon Museaum which called to them the most, a treasure trove of art and archaeology. From ancient Egyptian mummies and Roman sculptures to contemporary art installations, there was something for everyone! Our students explored the diverse collections. Many were particularly captivated by the intricate details of the ancient artifacts. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to engage with history and culture in the oldest public museum in Britain, established in 1693!

For those who wanted to get stuck into history in a different way, literally inside of it, it was the Oxford Castle and Prison which allowed them to get a glimpse of over 1,000 years of Oxford’s past. Students explored the ancient motte, the atmospheric crypt and the remains of the Norman castle. A guided tour around the site allowed students to get immersed into the mystery and eeriness of this Victorian prison and all the history it held.

After a busy morning it was time for some well-deserved free time. Students dispersed, eager to discover Oxford at their own pace. Many enjoyed the lovely weather, explored the novelty of the university town and picked up a souvenir or two. Unavoidably, there was discussion of Cambridge VS Oxford (with Cambridge being the obvious winner).  As the afternoon drew to a close, our students hopped back on the bus at 4pm to head back to Cambridge.

Their free time in the evening allowed the students to get a greatly needed dinner of their choosing after a tiring but exciting day. The day concluded with some relaxed evening activities; Trinity Hall hosted board games and bracelet making, allowing students to get creative with beads, bangles and bracelets. It was a lovely opportunity to wind down, with many students opting for an early night to get some rest after the long day, and get ready for the exciting day to come: the programme’s Sport’s Day!
