Summer 2025: Program 2 – Day 4

  • July 25, 2025
  • By Author: Nicole Banas

Our students were in for a change of pace today. Instead of their normal morning classes, students were led away from their typical classrooms to a completely new venue; the historic Cambridge Union Debating Chamber! The Cambridge Union Debating Society is the oldest continously running debating society in the world. Over the years, notable speakers at the Cambridge Union have included Winston Churchill, Stephen Hawking, Bernie Sanders, and the Dalai Lama. This historic chamber has been witness to some fascinating speakers and debates, which our students were to add to today!

Interdisciplinary Day here at Reach is an opportunity for our students to enhance some other skills outside of their courses, and dive into topics they otherwise would not be engaged in. It allows them to try a new challenge, work as a team with students outside of their subject classes, and most importantly, have fun! Today’s debating workshop offered a range of different topics, from AI to the efficiacy of mindfulness, free university and more. Our students went head to head across the historic debating chamber which echoes the Houses of Parliament in London, and which have served as the training grounds for many prominent individuals going on to change the world.

Students needed to fuel up before getting into their intense debates. After the sucess of our restaurant dinners a few days ago, our selection of Cambridge eats returned for lunch. This time, lunch was provided by the delicious Byron Burgers, the popular Nanna Mexico, and the much-loved Taste of Cambridge van. Eager to hide from the rainy weather, our students piled into our chosen restaurants for some good, warm food. After which, they headed off to stuck into their debates and enjoy some chill afternoon time to themselves.

Tonight, Reach introduced its first ever pottery night! And it was a roaring success. After our evening notices our students were given the choice of having a go at the Nintendo Switch, or joining our supervisors in getting creative with some clay. The activity was very popular and it was wonderful to see everyone’s creations, with some truly impressive Pinterest-inspired pieces. They will be given the weekend to dry before our student’s are given the opportunity to paint them next week!
