Summer 2025: Program 2 – Day 2

  • July 23, 2025
  • By Author: Nicole Banas

Our students are settling into their routine now that the second day of the program has been complete. With their sleep schedules adjusted, morning classes slid into our first batch of activities: some chill sports at Gonville and Caius Sports ground, including some competitive rounds of football, basketball, and tennis. Students who were in more of a crafty mood were invited to T Shirt and Tote Bag making, getting creative on their canvases. Some beautifully artistic pieces were made by the end of the two hours!

Hungry after their matches, our students headed into town for dinner. Today was a switch up from the usual college dinner with two exciting restaurants on the menu for our students: delicious Byron Burgers or the popular Nanna Mexico. After indulging in some of Cambridge’s eats, our students enjoyed a few hours free time to explore the city with their friends.

Today’s lecture was a brilliant and inspiring story by Ian Dickens, one of the great great grandchildren of Charles Dickens, a Cambridge alumn! Little was spoken of the famous figure, however, as Ian’s own story captured the students. Ian’s talk centred on the theme of disruption as a constant necessity in life. After decades of a comfortable life as a marketing director, he decided that change was needed, and adventure was on the horizon. He embarked on an inspiring year long trip around the globe, racing against other amateur crews, hopping from destination to destination. His stories of difficulty, stress, as well as self discovery and friendship, was a striking story to round off the evening. After a trivia round where our Fire and Ice teams once again went head to head to score points, our evening lecture finished off on a high note.

Some of our students chose to enjoy a bit of free time, whilst others chose an early night in bed. As always, we hosted some chill activities in the evening; some students chose to join us for a Kahoot quiz designed to get them thinking. Alternatively, our supervisors set up the Women’s Euro’s Semi-Final on the big screen in the McCrum Lecture Theatre to watch England V Italy go head to head. It was an nail biting watch for our English supporting supervisors, with the women scoring in the 96th minute; after some extra time, the Lionesses emerged victorious! Complete with popcorn and some intense cheering, the night ended on a success for the English team!
