It is hard to imagine a day with more fun things packed into it! Friday began with final classes of the course – for the law students, this meant the mock trial they had been busy preparing. But this was no ordinary trial – Severus Snape was being tried for the murder of Albus Dumbledore, and I was lucky enough to be one of the jury members (warned by the judge to discount anything I had read in the Daily Prophet.) The students had clearly done so much preparation – everything from the opening statements to the cross-examination of the witnesses (Harry Potter even took to the stand!) was brilliant. It really was like a proper court room, with the clerk telling us when we could enter and exit and when the court could rise etc. After some serious deliberation, and checking what the magical definition of ‘self-defence’ is, we decided Snape was guilty.
In the afternoon was the Sabre Day extravaganza, one of my favourite activities of the whole program. It was wonderful seeing students with their faces painted with the Ghanaian flag and wearing the special t-shirts they had painted earlier in the program and congregated in the centre of town. We were joined by Ghanaian dancers and African drummers, and soon the city centre was filled with people dancing and drumming, building awareness and raising funds for The Sabre Charitable Trust.
The evening’s entertainment was the Talent Show, and it was amazing to see the range of talents from both the students and the staff, from beautiful pieces on the piano, to wonderful singing, and some excellent dancing. A particular highlight was a couple of students doing some extremely accurate impressions of the staff, which had everyone in hysterics!
