Spring 2018: Day 9

  • April 11, 2018
  • By Author: Jenny
The students were up early again today, and after a continental breakfast they headed off to their subject-specific classes. In medicine, the students explored sensory perception with their specialist tutor. After studying the theory, students experienced ‘The Third Hand Illusion’. In this experiment, a prosthetic arm was placed next to the real right-hand arm. A screen was then placed to hide the real right-hand arm. The students were then given some time to get used to their new arm. When the prosthetic arm was then stroked with a brush, the sensation was felt as if it was on the real arm. The students were very impressed that visual information could ‘trick’ the sensory brain.

Spring bonding

We all shared a yummy pasta bake for lunch at Reach Hall today as the students used some time in their lunch break to work on their presentations. Monika, our Director of Curriculum, led a fantastic interview skills workshop this afternoon. The students were then given the opportunity to sign up for a practice interview. It was great to see that all the students have been inspired to put themselves forward for an academic interview in their chosen subject.

Creating storyboards

For dinner this evening, the students had the opportunity to sample the Cambridge restaurants of their choice. The group was equally split between burgers, sushi, and Nando’s! A fantastic workshop on film-making drew the day to a close. As well as learning the theory behind different methods of film-making, the students created a storyboard for a short film covering their favourite ‘Reach Discovery’. After another fantastic day at Reach, the alarms are set for tomorrow morning because we are getting up early to head in to Cambridge for a classic Full English Breakfast!
