Summer 2023: Program 3 - Day 8

Day 8

Finally – some sun!!! After a hectic, jam-packed weekend full of activities and excursions (don’t forget to check out the blog/Instagram/tiktok for a glimpse into what everybody got up to!) students were all really excited to get stuck back into their lessons. Luckily, the weather is finally, FINALLY picking up and getting lots sunnier so some students are now able to work outside! The English class had a fantastic introduction to everything Gothic. From Dracula, to Frankenstein, to Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Rossetti’s Goblin Market, our fantastic teacher made sure all the greats were covered and remarked about how engaged and excited the students were. We are particularly excited for tomorrow: today the creative writing students were discussing ideas and themes to develop for tomorrow’s collaborative creative writing piece! Everyone is so eager and we are so grateful for such motivated, enthusiastic and sensitive thinkers. We are so impressed about their conduct inside and outside the classroom and our teachers are so keen to teach such interested and interesting young learners.

Later on, after a lovely lunch in the sun, we took everyone punting to unwind from a veery hectic weekend. This is one of the most quintessentially Cambridge things to do and students have been excitedly talking about it all week. The river flows through the West side of the city and passes by many famous colleges, including John’s and King’s. Our knowledgeable supervisors were able to give them lots of information about Cambridge, so our students could get to know it even better: we definitely did not know that Pink Floyd got their first big gig at a pub on the Cam! Punting skills potentially leaving much to be desired, luckily we had no causalities and no one fell in! Although this is rare and apparently “just can’t happen”, this did unfortunately happen to me on the first time I ever punted…

In the evening, we had a fascinating talk from Tony Evans about a life in aviation – we learnt about his work as a commercial and military pilot. The level of student engagement was evident by the number of excited hands that went up at the end, eager to ask questions! Afterwards was the long-awaited International Quiz! Our supervisors worked hard to ask lots of tricky questions. Some students also decided to sing their hearts out with some very popular Taylor Swift karaoke while others prepared for the World Fair. We are really excited about this – it is a chance for the students to prepare a short presentation to their peers and staff about where they’re from and their different cultures.

We are really excited for the last week of school! We have a lot of big events coming up, such as the Interdisciplinary day as well as the extremely long-anticipated TALENT SHOW!!

As usual stay tuned on everything our students are getting up to through our Instagram and tiktok on: @reachcambridge
