Online Courses FAQ

What experience does Reach Cambridge have in providing educational courses?

Since 2005, Reach Cambridge has given thousands of young people from all over the world the opportunity to prepare for the future in a university environment. Based in the historic city of Cambridge, our exciting and varied program comprises academic subject courses, group activities, lectures and excursions.

We are very proud of the fact that most of our families apply to Reach based on positive feedback and recommendations from siblings, friends or their school.

Why should I choose an online course?

For many students, a highlight of our residential programs is the academic courses that take place each day. Based on feedback from our families, we have introduced online courses to enable us to offer the same high-level of academic learning to people who may be unable to join a program in Cambridge. This will be the same quality of teaching, but with a twist - a huge benefit of these online courses is that they will be one-to-one. This means the curriculum will be based solely on each individual’s requirements to expand their knowledge base and challenge and prepare them for their future academic studies.

What are the learning objectives?

Whether you’re looking to expand your existing passion or to discover something new, our online courses are perfect for every interest and every level!

Through each one-to-one course, students will:

  • Improve subject knowledge
  • Increase confidence
  • Grow in independence
  • Acquire key skills
  • Overcome insecurities
  • Challenge expectations of learning and of yourself
  • Explore new ideas and theories
  • Take control of their education
  • Learn about university life
  • Have fun!

Who will be teaching these online courses?

Our inspiring team of teachers works closely with our Director of Curriculum to provide the highest quality subject courses. Many of our teachers are working or studying at high-level academic institutions such as Cambridge, Oxford or London universities. They usually are Fellows, Professors, researchers or postgraduates and specialists in their field. Here at Reach, our teachers have significant autonomy in creating their courses so that they can utilise their expertise fully.

Is this similar to an online tutoring service?

While Reach Cambridge Online Courses will take on more of a tutoring format than our usual in-person programmes, the courses will still fall within Reach’s usual mission to bridge the gap between school and university learning and to help students explore their academic passions free of the usual stresses and constraints of exam-driven schooling. Because of the tailored nature of these classes, each lesson will look a little different, but we will maintain our focus on joy driven learning which encourages students to ask big questions and take unselfconscious risks to follow their curiosity.

Is it possible to offer online courses to groups?

We offer bespoke courses to groups and we would be very happy to discuss this with you for our online courses. Please email online@reachcambridge.com with your specifications and one of our team will be in touch.

What software do I need?

All our lessons will take place over Zoom. We will send over more information on how this works and the processes in place to ensure lessons are efficient, rewarding and safe.

What materials will I need?

To get started, all you need is an internet connection, paper and something to write with, and the ability to speak with your tutor over Zoom. To use Zoom you will need an external microphone and webcam if these are not already built into your computer. Your tutor will inform you about anything else that might help to enrich your classes.

When will the lessons take place and how long will they be?

Each tutor will work with students to come up with a schedule of lessons which suits both the student’s availability and the nature of their lessons together.

How many hours of study can I sign up for?

Our bundles begin at 10, 20, or 40 hours of subject study with the option to supplement with leadership and study skills. Additional hours of study can be booked at a preferential rate by speaking to a member of the advisory team.

Can I choose more than one course?

Our 10 hour lesson bundle must be dedicated to one academic subject course. If you would like to discuss studying more than one academic course subject in our 20 or 40 hour bundles, please speak to our expert advisers in your first personalised session or contact us at online@reachcambridge.com

What should I do if I need to cancel or reschedule a lesson?

If you need to cancel one of your lessons, you will need to notify your Reach adviser at least 24 hours in advance of when the lesson was set to begin. Your adviser will then communicate with your tutor and help you to reschedule the lesson. Any failure to attend an online lesson without 24 hours notice will result in being charged for that lesson.

What can I do if my internet connection falters during my lesson?

Some tips for getting the most out of your internet broadband include:

  • using an ethernet cable to connect your device to the internet (rather than using wifi);
  • positioning your router as far from other devices which might cause interference as possible;
  • trying to limit the number of other people streaming or video calling on the same internet connection at the same time.

Can I take lessons online & join you in Cambridge for a program?

Absolutely! Students can benefit from our one-to-one personalised online lessons and join us in Cambridge for one of our international spring or summer programs.

The oldest form of study in the world, a Liberal Arts curriculum operates on the understanding that all academic disciplines are interrelated. How do mathematical formulas inform some of the world's most famous art? What were some of the most important technological advancements throughout history? What is Einstein's theory of relativity and how did it change the way we think? Why did the world suddenly seem to change and develop at an accelerated pace in the 20th century? How did philosophy, art, literature, painting, and music cope with this new understanding of the world? What is postmodernism? Are we living in a post-postmodern era now? What has been the impact of social media on the public discourse? The perfect foundation for a future education in any subject!

Philosophy

One of the oldest academic disciplines in the world, philosophy has changed a lot since its Ancient Greek founders walked barefoot through cities and gathered on picturesque hills. But in other ways, it hasn't changed so much at all. Consider the big questions alongside giants from the past like Socrates, Plato and the dozens of more contemporary philosophers who show us who we are by asking the big questions. Introducing key concepts and schools of thought from throughout the history of philosophy, this course also includes a key focus on the development of critical thinking and argumentation. How did philosophy, art, literature, painting, and music cope with this new understanding of the world? What is postmodernism? Are we living in a post-postmodern era now? What has been the impact of social media on the public discourse? This intensive and inventive course asks students to pursue their curiosity without boundaries and offers them the opportunity to develop both critical thinking skills to help them in whatever comes their way. But in other ways, it hasn't changed so much at all. Psychology

Psychology examines the mind, behaviour and experience, through both scientific research and conceptual theorising. From Freudian psychoanalysis to the latest advances in brain-scanning, Psychology addresses the question of what it is to be human through a focus on the way we think and act. Requiring both rigorous scientific method and profoundly open thought, no other subject addresses both the Sciences and the Humanities in quite the same way. Our Psychology course aims to provide students with a broad and engaging introduction to the many different areas of the discipline that can be pursued at university level. From the workings of cognition to the ethics and methodology of psychological research, it will leave students with a firm understanding of the many varied strands which make up this heterogeneous subject. The course will touch upon a wide range of research areas such as cognitive psychology, behaviourism, social psychology, neuroscience, bio-psychology, psychopathology and developmental psychology.

  • using an ethernet cable to connect your device to the internet (rather than using wifi);
  • positioning your router as far from other devices which might cause interference as possible;
