Orange Coast Community College presents…
Summer in Cambridge, England
June 28th – August 10th, 2008
Give me a quick summary (my cell phone is ringing)...
This summer, 40 students will take summer school in Cambridge,
England.
Classes are through OCC and are transferable. The
session is for the same eight weeks as it would be if you
took a class at OCC, except that two weeks of classes will
be here and the next six weeks will be spent living in a dorm
at Downing College at the University of Cambridge. We leave
LAX on June 28th, 2008 and return August 10th, 2008. That photo
to the right is Cambridge University. It ain’t OCC, baby!
Who’s Leading this Invasion of England?
OCC English professor Raymond Obstfeld has taken three previous groups to Cambridge,
so he is very familiar with the area. He is the author of
40 books, including several best-selling novels (Earth Angel),
a book of poetry (The Cat with Half a Face), and over a dozen
non-fiction books that cover topics from comparative religion
to animal behavior to rock-’n’-roll quotations. His most recent book
'On the Shoulders of Giants,' co-written with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, hit number 25 on the New York
Times bestseller list. He is also an experienced screenwriter, with ten scripts either sold
or optioned to studios and one recently produced. In addition,
he is a contributing editor to Writer’s Digest magazine.
What’s Up with Cambridge? Isn’t that a Smelly Cheese?
Cambridge University is the most highly regarded university in England, and one
of the top schools in the world. Although you won’t be attending
their classes, you will be living in dorms and attending classes
on the University campus, allowing you to experience some
of what it would be like to attend.

Cambridge alumni include
Sylvia Plath (poet, novelist, The Bell Jar); John Milton,
(poet, Paradise Lost); Samuel Taylor Coleridge (poet and opium
enthusiast); Lord Byron (poet and poor swimmer); Stephen Hawking
(A Brief History of Time); Sir Isaac Newton (gravity guy);
Charles Darwin (evolution guy); Crick and Watson (Nobel Prize
for discovering DNA); Prince Charles (royal guy); Emma Thompson
(actress). But Cambridge is much more than the University.
It is also a charming small town filled with quaint shops,
cobblestone streets, lively pubs, and pale-skinned people
with funny accents. Only an hour by train from London, Cambridge
is the ideal place to study and live.
What’ll We Do in England for Six Weeks?
First, there’s the whole “school” thing. I’ll be offering two courses:
Eng. 148: British Film as Literature. In this class, we’ll
watch some of the classic examples of English, Scottish, Welsh,
and Irish films and learn why they are so well regarded. The
films will include Trainspotting, The Third Man, The Commitments,
Remains of the Day, etc.
Eng. 101: Advanced Composition/Writing
about Literature. Students will be taught how to think critically
and write essays about literature.
In addition, the following independent studies will be offered:
Eng. 119: Introduction
to Creative Writing
Eng. 122: Novel Writing and
Eng. 127: Scriptwriting.
Living in England for six weeks while working
on a novel or screenplay doesn’t sound too bad, does it?
Second, there’s the whole “cultural experience” thing. Classes are
held only Monday through Thursday, and each course has only
two meetings a week.
So, if you’re taking one class (which
is all that is required), you will have ample opportunity
to travel, either around England or on mainland Europe.
To enhance that experience, we have several trips planned, including one to London and optional ones to York and Paris.
Third, and most important, the overall experience is unlike anything you may have done
before. Classes are smaller, so the academic experience is
much more personal. Close friendships are formed. And there
are many optional group activities that have been very popular
in the past, including coed basketball, weekly movie nights,
pizza parties, and so forth. There’s lots to do and plenty
of great people to do it with.
How Much Is this Gonna Cost
Me (or My Unsuspecting Parents)?
$6,500.
At first, six grand sounds like a lot. But look again. Okay, it still sounds like
a lot. But it isn’t. Here’s what you get for your money:
• Roundtrip airfare
• Lodging in a University dorm. Each student will share a spacious room or can pay a supplement for a single room.
• Breakfast and dinner
• 2-day/1-night trip to London, including hotel, tickets to
a play, bus tour of London, tour of the British Museum, and
a tour of the Tower of London
• Optional weekend trips to York and Paris, France.
Six thousand isn’t much more than many people spend to live in Orange County
for two months. The difference is that instead of heading
off to the mall, you’ll be living in England, maybe heading
off to London or Paris. Instead of coming back with a Thighmaster,
you’ll be coming back with a lifetime of memories and friendships.
Now What?
If you’re interested, contact Raymond Obstfeld via
email at robstfeld@cox.net or by phone at (714) 432-5043.
You’ll go on a list of prospective students and receive more
information on deposits and other deadlines within the next
few weeks. Only forty students are going and the trip has
filled quickly the last three times, so don’t procrastinate
too long. Meantime, get your passport--just in case!

Accommodations
Students live at Downing College, one of the 31 Colleges that
make up the University. In many ways, this is the most exciting
and rewarding aspect of the trip. Living in a Cambridge College
is the only way to have a truly authentic Cambridge University
experience.
Downing is a vibrant place during the summer,
with open-air Shakespeare plays performed in the grounds every
evening and a large number of international students at the
College. Plus, the Porter’s Lodge at Downing provides invaluable
information about local life as well as 24-hr. security.
Students share a twin room with another same-sex member of the group, although they can choose to have a private room for an additional fee. Daily breakfast and dinner is included. Each
room has a daily maid service and bed sheets are changed weekly.
Breakfast is in the College Dining Hall. Dinner could be at
a local eatery or within the College.
At the College, students
can make phone calls, receive mail, watch television, do homework
and do their laundry.
The facilities at Downing are incredible:
There are large grounds despite being in the city centre,
including sports pitches, tennis courts, a squash court and
a fitness centre. There is a College bar and common room with
a pool table and SKY television. You can get a high speed interenet connection in your room and there are loads of internet cafés in the town. It is a perfect
setting for an academic program.
Support: There are plenty
of additional provisions such as arranged social activities,
sporting activities, 24-hr. support and medical services.
Enrollment Fees
An enrollment fee of $26.00 per unit must be paid to Coastline
Community College, Golden West or Orange Coast College at the time of
registration. In addition non-resident students pay an additional
$152.00 for a total of $178.00 per unit. This tuition is state mandated
and subject to change.
